Overview of Lesson:

In order to internalize and comprehend cause and effect, students were asked to write about the causes and effects for various issues.  Students chose important issues like childhood poverty and global warming.  Student wrote essays and created presentations using Google Docs and Slides.  In speaking with Ms. Marker after the completion of the project, she mentioned that she asked her students’ opinions in regards to using Google Docs and Slides vs. MS Word and PowerPoint (desktop versions).  The students shared that they liked the collaborative aspect to using Docs and Slides and appreciated that Ms. Marker was able to give them feedback in real time.

Shirley & Bill Wallin ES- Mrs. Plott, Humanities Teacher

NVACS:

W.1.6 With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.

H3.1.2A Discuss the daily routines and occupations of parents or guardians.

The Humanities Teacher at Wallin ES, Mrs. Plott, approached me looking for a way to integrate the tech skills she teaches with first grade content.  We looked at the Social Studies content for first grade and found that students are asked to be able to share what their parent or guardian does for a living.  In her class, she has been working with the students to get them familiar with the keyboard.  We used Voki.com with the first graders to integrate these two ideas.  Students were able to create an avatar and type in the information they learned about their parents' occupation.  It was a win-win for the students and Mrs. Plott.
